Composer: David Heuser Instrumentation: String Quartet Year Composed: 1988/2025 Duration: 21 minutes (3 movements: 6:15, 6:45, 7:30) Pages (score): 60 Cost: Purchase: $25.00
Program Notes:
The first part of the String Quartet to be written, the second movement, was written during my first year at college, in 1985-1986. The entire piece, then called String Quartet No. 1, was completed in 1988, and was performed by some intrepid colleagues as part of a composition recital at the Eastman School of Music, where we were all students. The final score and parts were notated by hand, as this was still a few years before good-quality music notation software was readily available.
In 2025, I decided to finally engrave the piece using notation software and use that opportunity to revise the piece at the same time. The revision process ended up being a pretty light touch, with only the first movement (what I had called, in my original program note from 1988, a "scherzo of sorts") really going through any major changes, and even those were not particularly extensive. Very little from the second movement ("slower and more congenial") was revised, and the last movement ("minimalist techniques" used in a "non-triadic setting") was left just about the way it was in 1988.
